Goldsworthy wins Horne Prize 2017
The Saturday Paper and cosmetics company Aesop announced writer Kerryn Goldsworthy as the winner of the $15,000 Horne Prize 2017 for her essay, ‘The Limit of the World’.
‘The Limit of the World’ is described as ‘a poignant, knowing work about [Goldsworthy’s] father’s experience of dementia and the state of elder care in Australia’. ‘This is a beautiful and subtle essay,’ the judges said. ‘The writer has something to say, and she says it. Goldsworthy’s piece is sophisticated and simple at the same time, a very fine piece of writing.’
Goldsworthy’s essay was announced as the winner on 6 December 2017 and chosen from a shortlist announced in November. It was published in the Saturday Paper on 23 December, and will be available on the Aesop website and as a standalone publication in Aesop’s Australian stores in mid-January.
Now in its second year, the Horne Prize is named after author Donald Horne and requires entrants to address ‘some part of the theme “Australian Life”’. The 2017 award attracted close to 400 entries.
