Greens propose amendments to Fair Work Act for casual workers
Australian Greens deputy leader Adam Bandt has introduced a private member’s bill calling for an amendment to the Fair Work Act to protect casual workers, reports Inside Retailing. However, small business would be excluded from the amendment, because Bandt said there was a place for casual labour in the workforce. ‘The amendment would provide a process for insecure workers to make an application to move to ongoing employment on a part-time or full-time basis with paid leave entitlements,’ reported Inside Retailing. ‘A staggering number of casuals and people on rolling contracts now make up our workforce,’ said Bandt. ‘Only Spain has a higher rate of insecure work than Australia now.’
