Best books of 2012: a round-up
The ‘best books of the year’ lists have become a book industry tradition in the lead-up to Christmas, and this year is no exception. Below we round-up some of the local and international offerings from booksellers and the press.
From local booksellers:
Readings in Melbourne has compiled lists for the year’s best fiction, crime fiction, nonfiction, food and wine books, art and design books, YA, junior fiction and picture books, as recommended by the bookstore’s staff.
In Sydney, Shearer’s Bookshop staff Antonia, Jane and Kay have blogged about their favourite books of 2012; Jon Page from Pages & Pages Booksellers has revealed his top five reads; and Gleebooks has shared its staff favourites.
From local media:
Every year the Age/SMH asks a selection of writers to list their favourite books of the year. The Australian Book Review has also released its books of the year (available to subscribers only).
In New Zealand, the Listener announced its 100 best books of 2012 and the Christchurch City Libraries gave a list of its best books.
From international media and booksellers:
In the UK, the Sunday Telegraph‘s book critics each chose their favourite books of 2012; the Guardian asked writers and poets to give their books of the year; and the Independent announced its literary fiction picks of the year.
In the US, the New York Times lists a huge 100 notable books of 2012, while the Washington Post has compiled its 10 best books of 2012.
Trade journal Publishers Weekly revealed its best books of 2012; Kirkus Review selected its best fiction, nonfiction, teen, children, indie and book apps for the year; and the Slate Book Review focussed on the overlooked books of 2012.
Amazon’s editorial team tracked down its top 100 picks for 2012, Barnes & Noble gave its own list of the best books of 2012, and GoodReads has announced the winners of its Choice Awards for 2012.
