Amazon targets children with new Kindle Fire subscription service

In the US, Amazon has unveiled a new subscription service for its Kindle Fire devices, which is targeted at children aged between three and eight, reports Publishers Weekly. Prime members can subscribe to Kindle Free Time Unlimited, which offers access to books, games, movies, television shows and educational apps, for US$2.99 (A$2.85) for one child or US$6.99 (A$6.66) for a family. For non-Prime members, the same subscriptions are priced at US$4.99 (A$4.75) and US$9.99 (A$9.52). According to PW writer Karen Raugust, while the advent of subscription models like Kindle Free Time Unlimited may change the way consumers access ebooks, it also raises questions about whether subscriptions could cannibalise sales of individual ebooks. Raugust also reports that Amazon’s compensation model for participating publishers is unclear.
