Griffiths, Denton stories re-published in new series for younger readers

A new series of illustrated books for younger readers will feature previously published short stories from Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton, Pan Macmillan has announced.

The series kicks off with the release of The Cat, the Rat and the Baseball Bat in June. The book features a single story taken from Griffiths and Denton’s illustrated short-story collection The Cat on the Mat is Flat, which was published by Pan in 2006.

In the new book, which is designed for ‘beginning’ readers aged four and up, Griffiths’ rhyming story has been reproduced in a larger format, and Denton’s original black and white illustrations appear in colour. The book will be released simultaneously in print and ebook format.

The series will include two more titles, Ed and Ted and Ted’s Dog Fred and Andy G, Terry D, the Brave Tea-lady and the Evil Bee, in July, with both stories originally published in The Cat on the Mat is Flat. The publisher is also planning to release four more titles in 2014.

Pan Macmillan children’s publisher Claire Craig told Books+Publishing that the publisher was ‘very excited to be introducing a younger generation of readers to the comic brilliance of Andy and Terry’. ‘The exuberance, humour and rhyme of the individual stories in this collection make them perfect for younger readers,’ said Craig.

Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton first collaborated on Just Tricking! in 1997, leading to an extensive creative partnership that has produced works including The Bad Book, The Very Bad Book, The 13-Storey Treehouse and The 26-Storey Treehouse (all Pan).
