Victorian Premier’s unpublished manuscript award shortlist announced

The shortlist for this year’s Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an unpublished manuscript has been announced.

The shortlisted manuscripts are:

  • A Field Guide to Birdwatching in Bad Weather (Naomi Bailey)
  • The Strays (Emily Bitto)
  • Foreign Soil (Maxine Beneba Clarke).

 

The judges for this year’s award—Francesca Rendle-Short, Sam Twyford-Moore and Paddy O’Reilly—also highly commended six other entries: Dreams by Kirsten Alexander, Hijrotic by Beverly Almedia, Fire and Icecream by Matt Davies, The Borrowed River by Leah De Frost, Baroque Days by Vince Leigh and Goodsir by Stuart McCullough.

The winner of this year’s award will be announced in Melbourne on 23 May during the launch of the 2013 Emerging Writers’ Festival. The winner will receive a cash prize of $15,000 and the two runners-up will each receive a mentorship provided by Writers Victoria.

The 2012 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an unpublished manuscript was presented to Graeme Simsion for The Rosie Project, which was published by Text in February and has since been sold into more than 30 territories.
