CBCA Book of the Year Awards 2013 winners announced

As reported in a Books+Publishing special bulletin, the winners of this year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year Awards were announced in Canberra on 16 August, marking the official launch of Children’s Book Week.

The winners and honour books in each of the categories are:

Older Readers

Winner

  • Sea Hearts (Margo Lanagan, A&U)

 

Honour books

  • The Ink Bridge (Neil Grant, A&U)
  • Friday Brown (Vikki Wakefield, Text)

 

Younger Readers

Winner

  • Children of the King (Sonya Hartnett, Viking)

 

Honour books

  • Pennies for Hitler (Jackie French, Angus & Robertson)
  • The Tender Moments of Saffron Silk (Glenda Millard, illus by Stephen Michael King, ABC Books)

 

Early Childhood

Winner

  • The Terrible Suitcase (Emma Allen, illus by Freya Blackwood, Omnibus)

 

Honour books

  • With Nan (Tania Cox, illus by Karen Blair, Windy Hollow Books)
  • Too Many Elephants in This House (Ursula Dubosarsky, illus by Andrew Joyner, Viking)

 

Picture Book of the Year

Winner

  • The Coat (Ron Brooks, illus by Julie Hunt, A&U)

 

Honour books

  • Herman and Rosie (Gus Gordon, Viking)
  • Sophie Scott Goes South (Alison Lester, Viking)

 

Eve Pownall Award for Information Books

Winner

  • Tom the Outback Mailman (Kristin Weidenbach, illus by Timothy Ide, Lothian)

 

Honour books

  • Lyrebird! A True Story (Jackie Kerin, illus by Peter Gouldthorpe, Museum Victoria)
  • Topsy-Turvy World: How Australian Animals Puzzled Early Explorers (Kirsty Murray, NLA)

 

Crichton Award for new illustrators

  • A Forrest (Marc Martin, Viking).
