Wheelers among 2014 Queen’s Birthday Honours list

The 2014 Queen’s Birthday Honours List has been announced, with Lonely Planet founders Maureen and Tony Wheeler both awarded Officer in the General Division (AO) for ‘distinguished service to business and commerce as a publisher of travel guides, and as a benefactor to a range of Australian arts and aid organisations’.

The Wheelers were recognised as co-founders of Lonely Planet in 1973; co-founders of the Planet Wheeler Foundation in 2007; co-owners of Text Publishing since 2011; and supporters of the Wheeler Centre since 2008.

Macmillan art publisher Jennifer Zimmer was awarded a Member in the General Division (AM) for ‘significant service to the visual arts as an administrator, academic and publisher’. Working as an art publisher at Macmillan since 1997, Zimmer has been responsible for over 100 titles documenting Australian art. She also founded Zimmer Editions in 1997 for limited edition artists’ books

Les Carlyon, author of True Grit (Vintage), The Great War (Picador) and Gallipoli (Picador), was awarded Companion in the General Division (AC) for ‘eminent service to literature through the promotion of the national identity as an author, editor and journalist, to the understanding and appreciation of Australia’s war history, and to the horse-racing industry’.

Bradley Trevor Greive, author of 20 titles, including the ‘Blue Day’ series of books that began with The Blue Day Book (Andrews McMeel Publishing), was awarded an AM for ‘significant service to wildlife conservation through philanthropy, and to literature as an author and mentor’.

Academic Tim Bonyhady, author of Good Living Street (A&U) and The Colonial Earth (MUP), was awarded and AM ‘for significant service to education in the field of climate and environmental law, as an academic and researcher, and to the visual arts’.
