National Young Writers’ Festival 2014 program announced

The National Young Writers Festival (NYWF) in Newcastle, NSW, has announced its 2014 program.

The festival, which runs from 2 to 5 October, will feature 80 artists across almost 80 events.

Highlights of the program include a debate on the question ‘Is Jurassic Park a Thing that Should Really Happen?’; a panel on ‘Slacktivism vs Street Protests’; ‘Mustard Chef’, an event where food bloggers make lunch and discuss their work; a discussion by writers and editors on ‘What’s So Great about the Novel?’; and the NYWF Intergalactic Ball.

Some of the writers attending this year’s festival are authors Benjamin Law, Michelle Law and Luke Ryan; Youth Without Borders founder Yassmin Abdel-Magied; screenwriter Niki Aken; Junkee.com managing editor Steph Harmon; poet Laurie May; and Oliver Mol, co-winner of the 2013 Scribe Nonfiction Prize for Young Writers.

The NYWF will also feature the Younger Young Writers’ Program (YYWP) for writers aged 13-17, which includes events run by authors Will Kostakis and Garth Nix. Supported by the Centre for Youth Literature, the YYWP runs from September to November and includes a digital program for young writers who can’t attend the festival in October.

This year’s festival is directed by Random House editor Lex Hirst, poetry editor Jessica Alice and writer and editor Alexandra Neil.
