The New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA) has announced that Dunedin-based author and poet Emma Neale is the winner of the 2014 Peter and Dianne Beatson Fellowship. The fellowship, worth NZ$7000 (A$6292), also gives the recipient the option of a month’s residency in a cottage at Foxton Beach in the Manawatu-Wanganui region of New Zealand’s North Island. Neale is the author of five novels and four poetry collections. She will use her fellowship to work on a new novel with the working title The Billy Book/Feather-head. The judging panel described the manuscript as ‘inventive, joyful and beautifully written’.
