Amazon wins right to administer .book domain
Amazon has won the right to administer the .book domain name after eight contesting companies withdrew applications from the private auction run by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The Register reports that Amazon may have spent up to US$10m (A$11.5m) on the address. Amazon also recently won the right to administer the .buy domain for US$4.6m (A$5.2m) and the .spot domain for US$2.2m (A$2.5m), but its application to use the domain .amazon was rejected after objections from several South American countries who argued that ‘amazon’ was a direct reference to the Amazonian region. As previously reported by Books+Publishing, an Australian government working group lodged a complaint against Amazon’s application for the .book internet domain, arguing that it restricts other entities from using the same domain and could have a ‘negative impact on competition’.
