Enright appointed inaugural Irish fiction laureate
Anne Enright has been appointed the inaugural laureate of Irish fiction, reports the Bookseller. As part of the role, which is worth €150,000 (A$218,630) over its three-year term, Enright will teach creative writing for a semester each at University College Dublin (UCD) and New York University (NYU), and promote engagement with Irish literature and reading through an annual lecture and public events. Enright has chosen to focus these events on nurturing the short story form and translating Irish work into other languages. Enright, whose novels include the Man Booker Prize-winning The Gathering (Vintage), was chosen from 34 authors nominated for the post. The laureate role was developed by the Arts Council of Ireland and supported by UCD and NYU.
