New children’s bookshop opens in Fremantle

A new bookshop specialising in children’s books and art supplies has opened in Fremantle.

The Paper Bird is located in the Moores Art Building on Henry Street and includes a gallery and studios for children’s writers and illustrators.

Owner Jennifer Jackson, whose background is in child mental health services, told the West Australian: ‘We’ll start with the bookshop and try to reach out to schools and libraries to support the local writers and illustrators first and foremost.’

The store is located near Notre Dame University and two independent bookstores, New Edition and Bill Campbell’s Second Hand Bookstore. Jackson said she hopes the area will develop into a ‘literary precinct in the West End of Fremantle’.

The store launched on Sunday 7 February with a book-making workshop with illustrator Samantha Hughes, an exhibition and book signings by local writers and illustrators.
