In the US, Simon & Schuster has created a new children’s book imprint dedicated to publishing books that feature Muslim characters and stories, reports the New York Times. Salaam Reads will publish at least nine books a year, from picture books through to YA titles. Head of the new imprint Zareen Jaffery said the books won’t emphasise theology or Islamic doctrine but will highlight the experience of being Muslim through characters and plots. ‘We have a chance to provide people with a more nuanced and, in my estimation, a more honest portrayal of the lives of everyday Muslims,’ said Jaffery.
