Former Lantern designers open studio OetomoNew
Former Lantern designers Daniel New and Evi Oetomo have opened a Sydney-based studio ‘devoted to designing beautiful books’, called OetomoNew.
New was previously art director and Evi Oetomo was senior designer at the Penguin Random House imprint. In July last year PRH announced it was cutting the number of books Lantern would publish in 2016 and 2017, and that publishing director Julie Gibbs was leaving the company at the end of the year.
‘We’re really excited to go out on our own, have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects and collaborate with good people doing good things,’ New told Books+Publishing.
Both designers have received numerous book design awards, including New for Best Designed Cookbook (three times), Cover of the Year (twice) and Book of the Year; and Oetomo for Young Designer of the Year, Book of the Year and Best Designed General Illustrated Book. Both New and Oetomo are shortlisted for this year’s Australian Book Design Awards in the Best Designed Cookbook Category, for Spice Temple (Neil Perry) and Greek (George Calombaris) respectively.
