Australian Book Design Awards 2017 winners announced

The Australian Book Designers Association (ABDA) announced the winners of the 2017 Australian Book Design Awards at an event in Sydney on 26 May.

The winning titles in each category are:

Best Designed Commercial Fiction Book

  • Red Herring (Jonathan Cullinane, HarperCollins), designed by Darren Holt

Best Designed Literary Fiction Book

  • The Museum of Modern Love (Heather Rose, A&U), designed by Sandy Cull

Best Designed Nonfiction Book

  • The Art of Reading (Damon Young, MUP), designed by Mary Callahan

Best Designed Series (including Classics)

  • ‘Wisdom Tree’ series (Nick Earls, Inkerman & Blunt), designed by Sandy Cull

Best Designed Children’s Illustrated Book

  • Lots (Marc Martin, Viking), designed by Bruno Herfst and Marc Martin

Best Designed Children’s Fiction Book

  • Magrit (Lee Battersby, Walker), designed by Amy Daoud

Best Designed Young Adult Book

  • Girl in Pieces (Kathleen Glasgow, HarperCollins), designed by Allison Colpoys

Best Designed Children’s / Young Adult Series

  • ‘Word by Word’ series (Little Hare), designed by Allison Colpoys

Best Designed Fully-illustrated Book Under RRP $50

Best Designed Educational Primary / Secondary Book

  • The Invisible War: A Tale on Two Scales (Scale Free Network), designed by Jaye Carcary

Best Designed Educational Tertiary Book (joint winners)

  • Basic Plumbing Services Skills (Cengage), designed by Chris Starr
  • Media & Society (Michael O’Shaughnessy, Jane Stadler & Sarah Casey, OUP), designed by Anthony Stephens

Young Designer of the Year

  • Andy Warren for 100 Australian Poems You Need to Know, Eat Well Now: And Your Body Will Thank You Later, The Complete Asian Cookbook and A Handbook for my Lover (all Hardie Grant Books). Read an interview with Warren on the ABDA website here.

The judging panel comprised Reg Abos, Murray Batten, Melanie Feddersen, Stuart Geddes, Sarah Jane Jones, Foong Ling Kong, Michelle Mackintosh, Susan Wyndham and international judge Dan Wagstaff.

ABDA also presented three ‘designers’ choice’ awards, which were chosen by ABDA members at the awards presentation. The winners are:

Designers’ Choice Book of the Year

  • Florentine (Emiko Davies, Hardie Grant), designed by Allison Colpoys and Kasia Gadecki

Designers’ Choice Best Cover of the Year

  • The Museum of Modern Love (Heather Rose, A&U), designed by Sandy Cull

Designers’ Choice Best Young Adult / Children’s Cover

  • Magrit (Lee Battersby, Walker), designed by Amy Daoud.
