Page wins 2017 ACU Poetry Prize
Poet Geoff Page has won the 2017 ACU Poetry Prize, worth $10,000, for his poem ‘Charles S. Ryan to Alice E. Sumner’.
Judge Chris Wallace-Crabbe said Page’s winning poem, which recreates a marriage proposal between two historical Australian families, displayed ‘artistic tact and intimations at a very fine level’.
Two runners-up were also recognised. Lesley Lebkowicz received the $5000 second prize and Judy Keighran received the $3000 third prize. Alastair Spate, Jenny Pollak and Susan Fealy each received $500 highly commended prizes.
Wallace-Crabbe said the poems submitted for this year’s prize ‘remind us just how alive this art is in Australia at present’.
More than 330 poems were entered, addressing the theme of ‘Joy’.
