Marsh named NZ Poet Laureate

The National Library of New Zealand has named Selina Tusitala Marsh as the 2017-19 New Zealand Poet Laureate.

Marsh, the author of three poetry collections and a lecturer at the University of Auckland, will ‘represent New Zealand’s poets, promote and advocate for poetry and produce published work’ during her two-year tenure. She will receive NZ$80,000 (A$72,100) and ‘a stipend of wine’ over the period.

Chief librarian at the Alexander Turnbull Library Chris Szekely said Marsh, a strong advocate for Pasifika poetry and literature, ‘is an extraordinary poet, performer and literary advocate’.

Marsh’s latest work, Tightrope, was published by AUP this year. She takes over the position from 2015-17 New Zealand Poet Laureate C K Stead.
