Asher Award 2017 shortlist announced

The Australian Society of Authors (ASA) has announced the shortlist for the 2017 Asher Literary Award.

The shortlisted titles are:

  • Our Lady of the Fence Post (J H Crone, UWA Publishing)
  • Enemy (Ruth Clare, Viking)
  • 1917 (Kelly Gardiner, Scholastic)
  • A Soldier, a Dog and a Boy (Libby Hathorn, illus by Phil Lesnie, Lothian)
  • The Waiting Room (Leah Kaminsky, Vintage).

Judges Joan Beaumont, Barbara Horgan and Tony Maniaty commended the shortlisted titles ‘for their literary qualities, their sense of invention, and the powerful anti-war themes they convey’.

The winner will be announced at an event in Sydney on 11 November.

The $12,000 award is presented biennially to a female author whose work carries an anti-war theme, and is administered by the ASA on behalf of the Australia Council. The award was last presented in 2015 to Joan Beaumont for Broken Nation (A&U).
