Production on ‘True History of the Kelly Gang’ to start in early 2018

Production on the film adaptation of Peter Carey’s Booker Prize-winning novel The True History of the Kelly Gang will begin in Victoria in March 2018, reports Inside Film.

Justin Kurzel will direct the film, which has been adapted by Shaun Grant. The cast includes George Mackay as Ned Kelly, as well as Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult and Essie Davis.

Kurzel said Carey’s book ‘felt like the true spirit of Ned Kelly … unsentimental, brutal, raw and visceral’. ‘His story is one of the great odysseys in history, and I feel excited to be bringing it to the screen with a fresh cinematic eye,’ said Kurzel.

The project is produced by Porchlight Film’s Liz Watts, Daybreak Pictures’ Hal Vogel and Romulus Entertainment’s Brad Feinstein.
