Australian publishers shortlisted for LBF International Excellence Awards
Australian publishers Quirky Kid and Typefi have been shortlisted for the London Book Fair (LBF) International Excellence Awards.
Quirky Kid is nominated for both the Educational Learning Resources Award and the Educational Initiatives Award, for an anxiety program for children aged 7 to 12 years called BaseCamp.
The program is set in a fictional Australian national park, and children are invited on a journey to ‘explore themed settings, team up with a support crew of experienced guides and interact with park animals, all intended to help them tackle the challenges of managing and overcoming anxiety’. Based in Sydney and Wollongong, Quirky Kid Clinic is a child, adolescent and family psychology clinic that also includes Quirky Kid Publishing, a specialised publishing house that develops therapeutic resources for children and adolescents.
Typefi—a provider of single-source automated publishing software for print, web and mobile—is nominated for the Accessible Books Consortium International Excellence Award, alongside entries from the UK, India and Brazil. Typefi uses XML-based structural tagging and automation to enable users to ‘automatically generate outputs in a wide range of accessible formats, from the same source content used for “standard” publishing’.
The awards, which are held in partnership with the UK Publishers Association, are presented in 17 categories, including international publishing, bookselling, academic and scholarly publishing, children’s publishing, literary translation and digital innovation. This year’s awards included a new category: the Audiobook Publisher Award.
Brazil, Lithuania and Latvia led the shortlists with five nominations each, followed by the US with four nominations and Estonia with three. Australia, Canada and Poland received two nominations each.
The winners will be announced on 10 April at the beginning of the London Book Fair.
