Noosa Heritage Library wins Heritage Award
Noosa Shire Council’s Heritage Library has won a Silver Award at the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) Heritage Awards for publishing local history book Noosa Remembers: A History of World War I Memorials in Noosa Shire by Joe Hextall and Jane Harding.
The book documents the history of many World War I memorials throughout Noosa Shire and pays tribute to the community’s fundraising efforts to erect these cenotaphs, halls and other memorials. It also looks at the roles the memorials have played in the community.
‘This wonderful book tells an important story of how a community paid tribute to sacrifice and honour. It’s also a salient reminder of how such physical structures continue to resonate in the daily lives of Noosa Shire residents,’ said Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington, at the launch of the book last year.
‘Creating memorials to the locals who served in World War I was very important to the community in the aftermath of the war,’ said Noosa Library Service Heritage Librarian Jane Harding, ‘and many of these memorials remain an enduring legacy in our towns.’
At the award ceremony, Queensland Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch said, ‘By conserving our heritage buildings and spaces, we not only protect physical objects and places, we protect our history, our achievements, our knowledge of where we’ve been and how far we’ve come, and our sense of place.’
