PANZ Book Design Awards 2018 winners announced

The winners of the 2018 Publishers Association of New Zealand (PANZ) Book Design Awards have been announced.

New China Eyewitness: Roger Duff, Rewi Alley and the Art of Museum Diplomacy (ed by James Beattie & Richard Bullen, Canterbury University Press), designed by Aaron Beehre, was awarded in the categories of best illustrated book and best cover, as well as the Gerard Reid award for best overall book design. The title also won the people’s choice award.

The winning titles in each category are:

Best book

  • New China Eyewitness: Roger Duff, Rewi Alley and the Art of Museum Diplomacy (ed by James Beattie & Richard Bullen, Canterbury University Press), designed by Aaron Beehre

Best illustrated book

  • New China Eyewitness: Roger Duff, Rewi Alley and the Art of Museum Diplomacy (ed by James Beattie & Richard Bullen, Canterbury University Press), designed by Aaron Beehre

Best non-illustrated book

  • Allen Curnow Biography and Poems Slipcase edition (Terry Sturm, ed by Linda Cassels, Elizabeth Caffin & Terry Sturm, Auckland University Press), cover design by Sarah Maxey, interior design by Katrina Duncan

Best children’s book

  • Aotearoa: The New Zealand Story (Gavin Bishop, Picture Puffin), design by Vida & Luke Kelly

Best educational book

  • The New Zealand Art Activity Book: new edition (Helen Lloyd, Te Papa Press), designed by Kate Barraclough, Kate Frances Design

Best cookbook

  • Eat Up New Zealand (Al Brown, A&U New Zealand), designed by Gary Stewart

Best typography

  • A Moral Truth (ed by James Hollings, Massey University Press), cover design by Gideon Keith, Strategy Creative, interior design by Gideon Keith & Carla Sy

Best cover

  • New China Eyewitness: Roger Duff, Rewi Alley and the Art of Museum Diplomacy (ed by James Beattie & Richard Bullen, Canterbury University Press), designed by Aaron Beehre

Young designer of the year

  • Rachel Clark for: The Art of Simple (Eleanor Ozich, Penguin); Bird Words (ed by Elisabeth Easther, RHNZ Vintage); Heloise (Mandy Hager, Penguin); and Hideaways (Hilary Ngan Kee & photography by Sam Stuchbury, RHNZ Godwit).
