‘The Big Issue’ announces 2018 fiction edition

The Big Issue has announced the writers who will feature in its 2018 fiction edition, which will be distributed by vendors on 10 August.

Traversing themes of race, identity, body transformation, forbidden love and coming of age, this year’s fiction edition includes commissioned work by authors Garth Nix, Marija Peričić, Maxine Beneba Clarke, Melanie Cheng and Tony Birch.

Eight stories were also chosen through the open submission process, which this year received more than 400 submissions. Work by writers Atul Joshi, Dasha Maiorova, Eleanor Limprecht, Elizabeth Flux, James Hughes, Laura Elvery, Melissa Manning and Natasha Buzzacott was chosen through a blind reading process by guest judge and author Graeme Simsion, Big Issue books editor Thuy On, and writer and editor Nicola Redhouse.

The Big Issue was able to include 16 additional pages in this year’s fiction edition with support of the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund.
