Brow Books signs Grills in two-book deal; Ord’s ‘diary comic’ to publish in February

Brow Books has acquired world rights to big beautiful female theory by writer and artist Eloise Grills as part of a two-book deal.

Described as ‘a book-length narrative essay combining text and images’, big beautiful female theory will expand on a piece of the same name by Grills, which recently won the Lifted Brow’s Prize for Experimental Nonfiction. big beautiful female theory will be published in 2020.

Brow Books will also publish ‘a curated collection of Eloise’s shorter nonfiction works’, which will incorporate previously published work as well as some new pieces. The as-yet-untitled collection will be published in 2021.

‘We’ve been publishing Eloise’s work in our magazine and on our website for years now—and have been reading her pieces whenever they’ve been published anywhere else … We are so very excited to be able to take this next step with Eloise,’ said Brow Books in a statement.

Grills said: ‘Brow Books is home to more weird, wonderful, outspoken and experimental books than any other publisher in Australia, probably the world. I’m so thrilled that they have opened up a hidey-hole in their house for a little weirdo like me. Publishing with the Lifted Brow magazine has been some of the most creatively challenging and fulfilling work I’ve done over the last few years, and I am so excited to continue this relationship through a book! Holy hell, two books!’

Brow Books also recently acquired world rights to a ‘diary comic’ by comics artist Mandy Ord. When One Person Dies the Whole World is Over is described as a ‘keenly intimate work about the search for meaning in the everyday, and what it might mean to belong’. It follows Ord through a year in her life, asking questions about ageing, love, and loss, and how we might try to balance work, family and art.

‘Funny, sad, and perfectly magnetic, When One Person Dies the Whole World is Over draws you in deep; before you know it you’re caring intensely about the lives into which we are given some precious glimpses,’ said the publisher.

When One Person Dies the Whole World is Over will be published in February 2019.
