New specialist kids agency launched
Lawyer and writer Justine Barker has launched a new literary agency focusing on children’s and YA books.
Mayfair Literary Agency will represent authors writing picture books, junior fiction, middle-grade and YA titles, and is only open to Australian writers. The agency is currently accepting submissions by previously published authors, and also has a pre-submission pitching service open to unpublished authors.
Barker told Books+Publishing that she was drawn to ‘the commercial side of publishing’ after attending the CYA Conference a few years ago.
‘It was actually quite accidental that I became a literary agent,’ says Barker. ‘Most literary agents have a publishing or bookseller background. I have neither. I was a lawyer. A commercial lawyer then a contracts advisor, to be precise. So this a very big career change for me.’
