Costa Book Awards 2018 shortlists announced

In the UK, the shortlists for the 2018 Costa Book Awards have been announced.

Shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award are:

  • The Silence of the Girls (Pat Barker, Hamish Hamilton)
  • The Italian Teacher (Tom Rachman, Text)
  • Normal People (Sally Rooney, Faber)
  • From a Low and Quiet Sea (Donal Ryan, Doubleday).

Shortlists were also announced for the First Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children’s Book Awards. In total, 20 books were shortlisted, including an even gender split across all titles, authors ages ranging from 27 to 75 years old, and debuts making up half of the shortlisted titles. Established in 1971, the Costa book awards recognise some of the ‘most enjoyable’ books of the year, written by authors based in the UK and Ireland.

The category winners will be announced on 7 January 2019 and will each receive £5000 (A$8880). The overall winner, receiving an additional £30,000 (A$53,270), will be announced on 29 January.
