Readings YA Prize 2019 shortlist announced
The shortlist for the 2019 Readings Young Adult Prize has been announced.
The shortlisted titles are:
- Highway Bodies (Alison Evans, Echo)
- What I Like About Me (Jenna Guillaume, Pan)
- Stone Girl (Eleni Hale, Penguin)
- Making Friends with Alice Dyson (Poppy Nwosu, Wakefield)
- Unmasked (Young Adult Edition) (Turia Pitt, Random House)
- The Learning Curves of Vanessa Partridge (Clare Strahan, A&U).
The winner will be announced in July and will receive $3000.
Chair of judges and Readings Doncaster bookseller Georgia Phelan said the shortlist ‘features a diverse chorus of powerful voices’. ‘These are books that will resonate deeply with readers, open conversations, and invite new understandings,’ said Phelan. ‘Above all, they exemplify the extraordinary power books have to empower, evoke and inform.’
The shortlist was selected by a judging panel comprising Phelan and three other Readings staff: Jackie Tang (Readings online), Dani Solomon (Readings Kids) and Kate O’Mara (Readings Hawthorn). Author Cath Crowley will join the judging panel to select the winner, and the Readings Teen Advisory board will also be consulted.
The Readings YA Prize is open to authors with a debut or second YA novel. Last year’s winner was Erin Gough for her novel Amelia Westlake (Hardie Grant Egmont). Readings also administers the Readings Children’s Book Prize and Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction, which were both launched in 2014.
