Staff at NYC bookshop chain McNally Jackson ‘likely’ to unionise

In the US, employees at New York City bookshop and stationary store chain McNally Jackson are voting on whether to join the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) this week, reports Publishers Weekly.

A long-serving staff member told PW that about 80 of the stores’ approximate staff of 100, across four bookstores and three stationary stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn, have signed union cards and are expected to vote ‘yes’.

The staff member told PW that the issues employees hope to negotiate with management include clear job descriptions, a line of progression for promotions, and a rise in wages.

Unions at US bookshops are uncommon, with exceptions including Book Culture and the Strand in New York City, and Powell’s Books in Portland, Oregon.
