Karp appointed S&S CEO
In the US, Jonathan Karp has been appointed president and CEO of Simon & Schuster (S&S), reports Publishers Weekly. Karp will succeed Carolyn Reidy, who died from a heart attack on 12 May.
Karp was appointed S&S publisher in 2010 and was promoted to president and publisher of S&S Adult Publishing in 2018.
In a letter to staff upon the announcement, Karp wrote that Reidy had shown him ‘how an executive communicates and leads—candidly, firmly, warmly, attentively, and generously’. Karp said that while S&S has been through a lot over the past four months, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the announcement that parent company ViacomCBS was exploring the sale of the publisher and the loss of Reidy, nonetheless: ‘I cannot imagine a more exciting opportunity than to lead Simon & Schuster.’
Karp entered publishing in 1989 at Random House, where he worked for 16 years and rose to editor-in-chief of the Random House division. He moved to Hachette Book Group in 2005, where he founded the Twelve imprint.
