In the UK, picture book Look Up! (Nathan Byron, illus by Dapo Adeola, Puffin) has won the overall £5000 (A$9010) Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.
Look Up! was named the winner of the best illustrated book category. It follows young science enthusiast Rocket as she tries to convince her older brother to look up from his phone at an impending meteor shower.
Waterstones children’s buyer Florentyna Martin said: ‘The mould of traditional picture book storytelling is redefined for a new era in this joyful and energetic tale … More than ever before, we are exploring nonfiction and inspirational characters at younger ages, and we champion Rocket’s boundless enthusiasm, curious nature and kind spirit as a hero for us all. She is a little person with big dreams, who has captured our hearts.’
