ALIA welcomes library budget announcement

The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) has welcomed the ‘positive outcomes’ for library and information workers announced in the Federal government’s 2020-21 budget.

The federal government announced $31.2 million in funding for national cultural institutions over four years, in addition to $23 million of previously announced relief funding in 2020-2021. It also announced $28.3 million in funding towards the Be Connected Program—a digital literacy program for people aged over 50 delivered in partnership with libraries.

‘While there remain concerns about long-term job security for library and information workers, the budget offers some positive outcomes for individuals employed in the sector,’ ALIA said.

There were no new measures related to the Australia Council revealed in the budget.
