Vale Josie Wowolla Boyle

Josie Wowolla Boyle, Wonghi storyteller and artist, died peacefully on 7 December 2020, surrounded by family.

Boyle was a Wongutha Elder, acclaimed storyteller, singer and artist who was born in the desert of Western Australia and grew up at the Mt Margaret Mission as a member of the Stolen Generations.

Her books include Bubbay’s Desert Adventure, The Spotty Dotty Lady and Mrs White and the Red Desert (all Magabala). She enchanted children of all ages with her books, performances, recordings and songs in Wongutha language and English.

The team at Magabala Books writes:

‘It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wonghi woman Josie Wowolla Boyle, one of Magabala’s most treasured authors.

‘Josie was a talented writer, artist and singer. We will miss Josie’s endless energy and passion, and her generosity of spirit. Josie overflowed with the joy of storytelling in its many forms, delighting every child—and adult—she met with her singing, reading and yarning.

‘We will miss you Josie.

‘Our deepest sympathies go out to Josie’s family and friends.’
