Brio joins Booktopia; Booksellers’ Choice shortlists

Independent publisher Brio Books has been integrated into Booktopia, in a deal which will see the small press continue to publish books under the Brio imprint as part of Booktopia Publishing.

Google will no longer allow the advertising of ebooks on Google Shopping ads, with physical books and audiobooks unaffected by the change. Creative Victoria’s latest round of VicArts funding has several writers and literary projects among its recipients.

In awards news, the ABA announced the shortlists for the Booksellers’ Choice 2021 Book of the Year Awards, while the winners of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize (Pacific region), SCBWI Crystal Kite Award and Ockham New Zealand Book Awards were revealed. Meanwhile, there are two new award categories in the triennial Melbourne Prize for Literature.

The UK’s competition regulators have cleared Bertelsmann’s acquisition of Simon & Schuster, while the deal is still under scrutiny in the US. This year’s Beijing Book Fair will run as a hybrid event, with only China-based publishers allowed to attend in-person, while in international awards news, the winners of the British Book Awards and the Dylan Thomas Prize were announced.
