Stella Prize 2022 longlist announced
The longlist for the $50,000 Stella Prize for women and non-binary writers has been announced.
The longlisted books are:
- Coming of Age in the War on Terror (Randa Abdel-Fattah, NewSouth)
- TAKE CARE (Eunice Andrada, Giramondo)
- Dropbear (Evelyn Araluen, UQP)
- She Is Haunted (Paige Clark, A&U)
- No Document (Anwen Crawford, Giramondo)
- Bodies of Light (Jennifer Down, Text)
- Bila Yarrudhanggalangdhuray (Anita Heiss, S&S)
- Stone Fruit (Lee Lai, Fantagraphics)
- Permafrost (S J Norman, UQP)
- Homecoming (Elfie Shiosaki, Magabala)
- The Open (Lucy Van, Cordite)
- Another Day in the Colony (Chelsea Watego, UQP).
The 2022 longlist includes four works of poetry, eligible for the first time this year, as well as three works of nonfiction, two novels, two debut short story collections and a graphic novel, Stone Fruit, which was also recently shortlisted for a Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Seven of the 12 longlisted books are written by debut authors and five of the 12 by First Nations writers.
‘A distinct outward-looking flavour characterised the pool of 220+ entries,’ said chair of judges Melissa Lucashenko. ‘Many authors focussed on global affairs rather than on the Antipodean alone; much of the short fiction and poetry we read was set offshore, and at least two of the longlisted authors are Australian expatriates. So much for Fortress Australia.’
Lucashenko is joined on the judging panel by Declan Fry, Cate Kennedy, Sisonke Msimang and Oliver Reeson, who all appeared at an event announcing the longlist on Monday, 28 February at the Wheeler Centre.
The winner of last year’s Stella Prize was UK-based writer Evie Wyld for her novel The Bass Rock (Vintage). For more information about the Stella Prize and this year’s longlist, visit the Stella Prize website.
