The Lifted Brow announces new board, plans to resume publishing

TLB Society Inc., which produces literary journal The Lifted Brow and publishes books under the imprint Brow Books, has announced a new board and the creation of ‘new foundational documents to form the basis of TLB’s restructure’.

In 2020, the TLB interim board announced it would undertake ‘a complete re-evaluation of the organisation’ following a ‘pause in public operations’ that commenced earlier that year in response to allegations of misconduct. In a statement published 11 April 2022, the new board said it has now drafted a TLB governance policy and human resources policy and code of conduct, developed with the assistance of an external consultant over the past year.

‘These foundational documents were developed to ensure that TLB meets its ethical responsibilities towards staff and fosters a healthy, safe and supportive environment,’ said the board, which now comprises president Lur Alghurabi, vice president Lachy McKenzie, treasurer Hassan Abul, secretary Zowie Douglas-Kinghorn and general members Elizabeth Bryer, Emily Paesler and Laura Pettenuzzo.

The board’s statement said The Lifted Brow plans to resume publishing in the near future with—pending funding—a paid editorial team and ‘clear and transparent job descriptions and contracts that specify rates, hours and responsibilities’.

‘We will be working towards a cost-effective digital publishing model that speaks to an allocated budget, to ensure that every writer and editor is compensated fairly and adequately.’

According to the statement, the board has ‘spent much of the past year rectifying relationships with our key stakeholders, and we are still in the process of doing so’, including working on fulfilling magazine subscriptions and finalising royalty payments for Brow Books authors.

‘Once we have met all of the financial, legal and administrative exigencies of TLB, we look forward to returning to publishing the excellent work you loved reading from us across prose, poetry, visual art and translation.’
