Balen, Novgorodoff win Carnegie, Greenaway medals

The UK Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) has announced the winners of the 2022 Carnegie and Kate Greenaway medals.

Katya Balen won the Carnegie Medal for children’s and YA books for her second novel October, October (Bloomsbury), about a girl, October, who must learn to spread her wings after a childhood spent living wild in the woods.

Danica Novgorodoff won the Kate Greenaway Medal for her illustrated edition of Jason Reynolds’ Long Way Down (Faber)—the first graphic novel to win the award since 1973. Novgorodoff’s adaptation of Reynold’s verse novel of gun violence and grief features hundreds of watercolour illustrations.

Balen and Novgorodoff each receive books worth £500 (A$880) to donate to a library of their choice and a £5000 (A$8800) cash prize.

The winners were chosen from shortlists announced in March.
