Spotify US unveils audiobook catalogue

In the US, audio streaming platform Spotify has unveiled its catalogue of 300,000 audiobook titles, reports the Bookseller.

Audiobooks on Spotify will sit alongside the platform’s music and podcast catalogues but each title must be purchased individually. The catalogue features new titles by authors including George Saunders, Tina Fey, Stephen Root and Michael McKean.

Spotify confirmed to the Bookseller that it plans to ‘quickly’ expand to other markets but no specifics have been detailed. In a statement Spotify vice president Nir Zicherman said it sees ‘a substantial untapped market’. ‘While audiobooks represent just a 6% to 7% share of the wider book market, the category is growing by 20% year over year,’ said Zicherman. ‘By bringing audiobooks to Spotify, we have the opportunity to both grow the space as a whole and enrich listeners’ lives.’
