Baillie Gifford Prize 2022 shortlist announced

In the UK, the shortlist for this year’s Baillie Gifford Prize for Nonfiction has been announced.

The six shortlisted books are:

  • Legacy of Violence: A history of the British Empire (Caroline Elkins, Vintage)
  • The Escape Artist: The man who broke out of Auschwitz to warn the world (Jonathan Freedland, John Murray Press)
  • My Fourth Time, We Drowned: Seeking refuge on the world’s deadliest migration route (Sally Hayden, 4th Estate)
  • The Restless Republic: Britain without a crown (Anna Keay, William Collins)
  • A Fortunate Woman: A country doctor’s story (Polly Morland, Picador)
  • Super-Infinite: The transformations of John Donne (Katherine Rundell, Faber & Faber).

The winner of the £50,000 (A$87,750) prize will be announced on 17 November.

All works of nonfiction by authors of any nationality are eligible for the award, which is the richest prize for nonfiction in the UK. The winner of last year’s prize was Empire of Pain: The secret history of the Sackler dynasty by Patrick Radden Keefe (Picador).
