Waterstones Book of the Year shortlist announced

UK bookselling chain Waterstones has announced the shortlist for its annual Book of the Year award.
The 10 shortlisted titles are:
- The Marriage Portrait (Maggie O’Farrell, Tinder Press)
- Heartstopper Volume 1 (Alice Oseman, Hodder Children’s Books)
- Lessons in Chemistry (Bonnie Garmus, Doubleday)
- The Escape Artist (Jonathan Freedland, John Murray)
- Otherlands (Thomas Halliday, Allen Lane)
- The Story of Art Without Men (Katy Hessel, Hutchinson Heinemann)
- In The Golden Mole (Katherine Rundell, illus by Talya Baldwin, Faber)
- Cooking (Jeremy Lee, Fourth Estate)
- Babel (R F Kuang, HarperVoyager)
- Skandar and the Unicorn Thief (A F Steadman, S&S Children’s).
The shortlist is drawn up by Waterstones booksellers who each nominate a book they think is outstanding and would recommend to readers. The winner will be announced on 1 December.
Last year’s winner was Paul McCartney for The Lyrics: 1956 to the present (Allen Lane). For more information about the shortlisted titles visit the Waterstones website.
