Erese wins final Deborah Cass Prize

Anneliz Marie Erese has won Writers Victoria’s 2022 Deborah Cass Prize for her story ‘International’.

Erese’s story was chosen from a shortlist of 11. She receives $3000 to assist in further development of her work, and Black Inc. will consider her manuscript for publication.

The runners-up are Min Chow for ‘Melonshine’ and Nilofar Zimmerman for ‘Kaa’. This year’s winners and runners-up were chosen by judges Paul Dalgarno, Lee Kofman and Sisonke Msimang.

Earlier this month, prize organisers announced that this year, the prize’s eighth, would be its last. The winners of the final Deborah Cass Prize were announced in an online ceremony featuring a keynote by writer and previous Deborah Cass Prize judge Alice Pung.

Established in 2015 in memory of academic and writer Deborah Cass, the prize is awarded to emerging writers from migrant backgrounds. Bryant Apolonio was the 2021 winner for his story ‘Independencia’.
