Fegan wins 2022 Catalyse Nonfiction Prize

Express Media and Deakin University have announced Sar Fegan as the winner of the Catalyse Nonfiction Prize, formerly the Deakin University Nonfiction Prize.

Fegan won for their piece ‘A Fiery Light’, described by prize judge Mira Schlosberg as ‘both a gorgeous portrait of a friendship between two queer people and a case study of the ways gender and sexuality shift and flow as we relate to others’.

Fegan wins $2000 courtesy of Deakin University and an editorial mentorship to develop their work further with Monash University Publishing publisher and Catalyse Prize judge Julia Carlomangno.

Chosen from a shortlist of 10 by judges Schlosberg, Carlomagno and David McCooey, the winner was announced at a special online event featuring readings from a selection of the shortlisted writers. The judges also named two highly commended pieces: ‘Marrickville: Is there no alternative?’ by Robbie Mason and ‘Trick of Light’ by Elizabeth Bourke.

Each shortlisted writer received an invitation to a craft development masterclass and a selection of new release books from UQP.

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Express Media partnered with Deakin University to present the 2019 Nonfiction Prize for Young Writers, after the prize began as a joint venture between Scribe Publications and Express Media in 2013. The winner of the 2021 award was Carly Stone for the essay ‘A Fox Runs Out of a Bush, Jumps in the Air, and Disappears’.
