IndieBound joins Bookshop.org

In the US, the American Bookseller Association’s consumer-facing online bookselling and marketing platform, IndieBound.org, will switch to using Bookshop.org for sales and fulfilment, reports Publishers Weekly.

Bookshop.org founder Andy Hunter said the change, which was meant to occur in 2020, was delayed by the pandemic. ‘The shift to Bookshop.org buttons was meant to eliminate consumer confusion, improve data for the indie channel, convert more consumers, generate more revenue for booksellers due to a simpler purchase flow and higher conversion rate, and optimise the impact of Bookshop.org for independent bookstores,’ said Hunter. ‘Beginning 1 March, all of this will be possible as IndieBound “buy” buttons will become Bookshop.org “buy” buttons with a new tagline emphasising support for independent bookstores.’

There are around 1650 US stores on Bookshop, which is about 70% of the ABA’s membership. Bookshop.org launched in the US in January 2020 as a way to help independent bookstores compete with Amazon. It also launched in the UK in November 2020.
