Judith Wright Poetry Prize, Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize shortlists

The shortlists for the 2022 Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize and Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize have been announced.

The eight poems shortlisted for the Judith Wright Poetry Prize are:

  • ‘New Terms for Timeless Behaviours’ by Chris Brown
  • ‘Intimate Textures of Toppling Times’ by Geraldine Burrowes
  • ‘Coastal Heath Collage’ by Jake Goetz
  • ‘Tinnitus as Hushing Haibun’ by Lesh Karan
  • ‘Camperdown Grief Junk’ by Yeena Kirkbright
  • ‘Viriditas / Little Big Scrub Poem’ by Abbra Kotlarczyk
  • ‘Soft Fruit’ by Shaine Melrose
  • ‘Blah Opus’ by Panda Wong.

The seven stories shortlisted for the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize are:

  • ‘Hamman’ by Daniel Alwan
  • ‘Golden Hour’ by Claire Aman
  • ‘Thirsty Trees’ by Miso Bell
  • ‘My Sweary Neighbour’ by C J Garrow
  • ‘Unnoted: Birdsong on the Road to Nowhere’ by Kim Kelly
  • ‘Together’ by Zoë Meager
  • ‘Half-time at the Roost’ by Lawrence Patchett.

This year’s Judith Wright Poetry Prize shortlist was chosen by judges Pam Brown, Toby Fitch and Lachlan Brown from over 600 entries. The winner will receive $6000, with second and third place receiving $2000 and $1000 respectively. The three poets will be published in the autumn 2023 issue of Overland.

Judges Laura Elvery, Paige Clark and Michael Winkler selected the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize shortlist from over 400 entries of short fiction themed loosely around the notion of ‘travel’. The winner will receive $5000 and publication in the autumn 2023 issue of Overland, while the two runners-up will be awarded $750 and online publication at Overland.

Last year Ender Baskan was the winner of the Judith Wright Poetry Prize, and Saraid Taylor won the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize.
