Tsao wins US PEN Translation Prize

Sydney-based writer and translator Tiffany Tsao won the US$3000 (A$4450) PEN Translation Prize for her translation of People from Bloomington (Budi Darma, Penguin Classics).

The translation prize was one of 17 awards and grants presented in the US Pen Literary Awards, worth a total of US$350,000 (A$520,000), reports Publishers Weekly.

Percival Everett received the largest of the prizes, winning the US$75,000 (A$111,000) PEN/Jean Stein Book Award for his novel Dr. No (Text), about a professor of mathematics who researches ‘nothingness’ and the aspiring supervillain who attempts to recruit him.

Other award winners include The Inheritors: An intimate portrait of South Africa’s racial reckoning (Eve Fairbanks, S&S), which won the nonfiction award; Calling for a Blanket Dance (Oscar Hokeah, Algonquin), which won the debut novel award; Night of the Living Rez (Morgan Tatty, Tin House Books), which won the award for debut story collection; and A Left-Handed Woman (Judith Thurman, FSG), which won the award for an essay collection.
