International Booker 2023 longlist announced

The longlist for the 2023 International Booker Prize, worth £50,000 (A$90,950), has been announced.

The longlisted titles are:

  • Ninth Building (Zou Jingzhi, trans by Jeremy Tiang, Open Letter)
  • A System So Magnificent It Is Blinding (Amanda Svensson, trans by Nichola Smalley, Scribe)
  • Still Born (Guadalupe Nettel, trans by Rosalind Harvey, Fitzcarraldo Editions)
  • Pyre (Perumal Murugan, trans by Aniruddhan Vasudevan, Pushkin)
  • While We Were Dreaming (Clemens Meyer, trans by Katy Derbyshire, Fitzcarraldo Editions)
  • The Birthday Party (Laurent Mauvignier, trans by Daniel Levin Becker, Fitzcarraldo Editions)
  • Jimi Hendrix Live in Lviv (Andrey Kurkov, trans by Reuben Woolley, MacLehose Press)
  • Is Mother Dead (Vigdis Hjorth, trans by Charlotte Barslund, Verso)
  • Standing Heavy (GauZ’, trans by Frank Wynne, MacLehose Press)
  • Time Shelter (Georgi Gospodinov, trans by Angela Rodel, W&N)
  • The Gospel According to the New World (Maryse Condé, trans by Richard Philcox, World Editions)
  • Whale (Cheon Myeong-kwan, trans by Chi-Young Kim, Europa Editions)
  • Boulder (Eva Baltasar, trans by Julia Sanches, And Other Stories). 

A six-book shortlist will be announced on 18 April and the winner on 23 May.

The Man Booker International Prize is awarded to a book translated into English. The prize money is shared equally between the winning writer and translator, and each shortlisted writer and translator also receives £2500 (A$4550) each.
