Vale Ross Gibson
Filmmaker and author Ross Gibson has died. Gibson was the author of several books including The Summer Exercises (2009), 26 Views of the Starburst World (2012), Changescapes (2015) and Memoryscopes (2015), all published by UWA Publishing, and of the poetry collection Flooded Canyon, forthcoming from Upswell Publishing.
Upswell publisher Terri-ann White writes:
‘Over many decades, Ross produced one of the richest bodies of work across artistic forms and media: writing, film, multimedia productions, installations in museums and galleries, and plenty of blueprints for thinking in the form of policy, manifestos and calls to action across cultural and artistic ventures. I first met Ross in 1993 at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts when he discussed the film he’d just made, Wild, about the Pilliga Forest in NSW, following the book by Eric Rolls, A Million Wild Acres. I remember being awestruck by his words and blurting out my garbled appreciation.
‘To have become his publisher by 2008 and to have worked with him on seven books while I was with UWA Publishing and then his final book, due in May with Upswell, has been one of the great joys of my life.’
