BookPeople 2023 Book of the Year shortlists announced
BookPeople has announced the shortlists for the 2023 Book of the Year Awards, formerly the Booksellers Choice awards.
The shortlisted titles, chosen from longlists announced earlier this month, are:
Adult fiction book of the year
- Limberlost (Robbie Arnott, Text)
- Cold Enough for Snow (Jessica Au, Giramondo)
- Horse (Geraldine Brooks, Hachette)
- All That’s Left Unsaid (Tracey Lien, HQ)
- Willowman (Inga Simpson, Hachette)
- Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone (Benjamin Stevenson, Michael Joseph)
Adult nonfiction book of the year
- Faith, Hope and Carnage (Nick Cave & Seán O’Hagan, Text)
- Reasons Not to Worry: How to be Stoic in chaotic times (Brigid Delaney, A&U)
- The Book of Roads and Kingdoms (Richard Fidler, ABC Books)
- Ten Steps to Nanette: A memoir situation (Hannah Gadsby, A&U)
- Not Now, Not Ever: Ten years on from the misogyny speech (Julia Gillard, Vintage)
- Bulldozed: Scott Morrison’s fall and Anthony Albanese’s rise (Niki Savva, Scribe)
Children’s book of the year
- Farmhouse (Sophie Blackall, Lothian)
- Come Together: Things every Aussie kid should know about the First Peoples (Isaiah Firebrace, Explore)
- A Tiny Light (Alison Lester, UQP)
- The Bookseller’s Apprentice (Amelia Mellor, Affirm)
- Runt (Craig Silvey, A&U Children’s)
- Snap! (Anna Walker, Scribe).
The BookPeople Book of the Year Awards recognise the best Australian titles released in 2022 that booksellers have selected as their favourite hand-sells. Members can log in to the BookPeople website to vote for their favourite titles.
The winners will be announced on Sunday, 18 June at the BookPeople conference gala dinner and awards night in Adelaide.
Last year’s winners were Love & Virtue (Diana Reid, Ultimo), Love Stories (Trent Dalton, Fourth Estate) and Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief (Katrina Nannestad, ABC Books).
