The Speedy Sloth to be read for NSS at new Sydney Zoo
The Speedy Sloth (Rebecca Young, illus by Heath McKenzie, Scholastic) will be read for the 23rd National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) event at 11am (AEST) on Wednesday, 24 May 2023, with a live-streamed reading from the new Sydney Zoo in Eastern Creek.
Each year, Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) selects one picture book for a simultaneous read-aloud event held in libraries, schools, pre-schools, family homes, childcare centres, bookshops, children’s hospitals and communities across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Last year’s live event from the National Library of Australia saw over 2.18 million young people read along with Australian singer-songwriter Josh Pyke as he read his book Family Tree (illus by Ronojoy Ghosh, Scholastic).
ALIA president Vicki Edmunds said, ‘We are excited to see preparations happening at thousands of libraries around Australia for this year’s NSS event. Our libraries are essential places in the community for not only fostering the love of reading but also an early appreciation for the value of literacy of all kinds.’
