Carmichael, Gibson, Haddad named SMH Best Young Australian Novelists 2023
The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) has announced the Best Young Australian Novelists for 2023.
The writers and their novels are:
- Jay Carmichael for Marlo (Scribe)
- Katerina Gibson for Women I Know (Scribner)
- George Haddad for Losing Face (UQP).
Now in its 27th year, the award recognises emerging writing talent and is open to writers aged 35 or younger at the time of publication of their nominated book. In 2023, each of the writers receive $5000, courtesy of the Copyright Agency.
Judges Fiona Kelly McGregor, Bram Presser and Spectrum editor Melanie Kembrey also awarded honourable mentions to Paul Dalla Rosa for short story collection An Exciting and Vivid Inner Life (A&U), Grace Chan for sci-fi debut Every Version of You (Affirm) and Eliza Henry-Jones for her novel set on a remote Scottish island Salt and Skin (Ultimo).
Last year’s overall winner of the award was Diana Reid for Love & Virtue (Ultimo), with Ella Baxter (New Animal, A&U) and Michael Burrows (Where the Line Breaks, Fremantle Press) also named Best Young Australian Novelists of 2022.
